Welcome to the Official WHES Studios Blog & Archives
The story of WHES Studios begins with its founder, William Harding, born on November 16, 2005, in Dover, New Hampshire. However, the technical and creative blueprint of the company was drafted decades earlier by his grandfather, Edward James Murphy. A veteran tank mechanic of the 3rd Armored Division, Edward James Murphy was a pioneer in computer technology, recognized as an inventor of the foundational technology that would later become Windows Defender. Raised in an atmosphere of high-level engineering and military discipline, William Harding learned early on that the scars of service and the code of the future are one and the same.
The bond between Alex Seropian, the co-founder of Bungie, and the Harding family is one of deep-rooted history. Alex Seropian was a high school friend of the mother of William Harding in the 1990s and shared an extremely close bond with Edward James Murphy years before the co-founding of Bungie. This connection serves as the cornerstone of WHES Studios. Under the visual consultation and creative advisory of Alex Seropian, William Harding is carrying forward a shared family legacy of innovation, bridging the gap between the pioneering spirit of his grandfather and the modern cosmic scale of the Scared Me For Life (SMFL) universe.
The formal public history of this vision began on April 7, 2017, with the launch of WHSROANOKE. Originally established as a digital hub for gaming and video game culture, it served as the first laboratory for the creative instincts of William Harding. On April 1, 2019, William Harding formally founded the company and transitioned into a professional music career. The unique sonic identity of his instrumentals was forged during this time, inspired by a compilation of four artists for whom Harding is a die-hard fan: the narrative-driven energy of CG5, the intricate electronic atmospheres of MiatriSs, the melodic emotional depth of Juice WRLD, and the raw, cinematic storytelling of NF.
In a moment of profound personal significance, Edward James Murphy passed away on December 24, 2019. Two weeks later, William Harding released the original song Goodbye Papa. This tribute debuted as a raw expression of grief and immediately became a fan favorite, recognized for the emotional intensity that now defines the WHES sound. Following the debut of the flagship IP, Scared Me For Life (SMFL), in February 2023, the studio officially transitioned into a multi-media company on August 21, 2023. To reflect expanding horizons in animation and film, the studio underwent its final prestigious rebrand from William Harding Studios to William Harding Entertainment Studios (WHES Studios) in January 2025.
As the studio celebrates its most ambitious year yet in 2025, the legacy of Edward James Murphy remains at the forefront. In the Scared Me For Life (SMFL) Finale teaser, as well as a celebratory parody portrait released for the 20th birthday of William Harding on November 14, 2025, the studio featured a deliberate and powerful callback. Edward James Murphy was portrayed as a Living Soul, a clear thematic reference to the Goodbye Papa single from 2019. This creative choice serves as a reminder that the mission of WHES Studios is to keep the spirit of its foundations alive through cutting-edge storytelling.
Even as he leads the studio, William Harding is constantly brainstorming new ideas for future projects, including new expansions for the SMFL universe. This creative drive is fueled by a personal dream: to one day share the stage with Charlie Green the 5th (CG5) in a live collaboration of their mutual talents. This admiration for the artist is deeply personal, as William Harding even named his pet cat Charlie Green the 6th in honor of his influence.
WHES Studios chooses radical transparency through the documentary, Behind Closed Doors: The Painful Creative Making of Scared Me For Life. This film provides an unfiltered view into technical sovereignty through the Ubuntu ecosystem and high-fidelity Blender animation. It also highlights the Founder’s Rule established by William Harding, stating that a script must move him to an emotional breaking point before it progresses to production. This emotional standard is further shown in the recording booth, where the legacy of Edward James Murphy is translated into the vocal performances of the SMFL universe.
The sonic identity of WHES Studios is shaped by a profound partnership with Elijah Stoltz. What began as a collaborative spark on CollabSpace evolved into a permanent alliance. While their talents mirror one another, the decision to feature across each other’s projects allows both artists to maintain diverse catalogs. Elijah Stoltz remains a recurring pillar of the company, ensuring audio production meets the highest level of aesthetic integrity.
WHES Studios operates on a Freedom Policy, ensuring that any collaborator, including Elijah Stoltz, maintains the right to depart the company at their discretion while retaining full ownership of their catalog for transfer to their own independent labels. Having spent 14 years protecting his own 2011 archives, William Harding refuses to hold the art of others hostage. The studio believes in mutual respect rather than legal restrictions.
The Scars of Life is more than a film; it is a lesson in forgiveness by convenience. It is a tribute to the childhood dreams born in Dover, New Hampshire, the military and technological genius of Edward James Murphy, the lifelong guidance of Alex Seropian, and the creative fire of Elijah Stoltz.
